The city of Sandy Springs and its private partners have lifted the curtain on the tenants who will occupy the retail portion of the new City Hall complex, which will open this summer.
“(The private retail partners) asked me, ‘What’s your vision for this?’ Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said. “I grew up in rural Alabama. We have a saying over there: ‘We’re going to treat you in so many ways you’re bound to like one of them.’ Well, here what I wanted to do was have so many different things going on that you’re bound to like one of them.”
Paul and JoAnn Chitty, chief operating officer of Selig Enterprises, the Midtown-based real estate company that led the retail portion of the project, spoke at a retail reveal event April 11 at City Springs’ Market Square, where the project’s seven retail tenants were announced. After their speeches, banners advertising each tenant’s space were unfurled. While the City Hall portion of City Springs will open in May, the retail part will open in phases starting in early summer.
Selig Enterprises worked with Carter, an Atlantic Station-based real estate company, on the 14-acre, mixed-use development. In addition to City Hall, the public portion will include a performing arts center that will seat about 1,000 individuals and a separate Byers Theatre that will house 350. The project also includes an apartment building, Aston City Springs, which is now open, and a four-acre park.
But the day belonged to the retail tenants. They include four restaurants:
o Café Vendome: Café Vendôme is known for handmade traditional French pastries and breads, in addition to sandwiches, quiches and coffee. This will its second location in Sandy Springs.
o Flower Child: Flower Child has developed an entire menu devoted to veggies, grains, fruits and healthy proteins. Their bowls, wraps, grains and greens are all made fresh daily with ingredients designed to revitalize one’s body, mind and soul.
o Nam Kitchen: Nam Kitchen is bringing authentic Vietnamese food to the city in a modern atmosphere created by Alex Kinjo of MF Sushi in Virginia-Highland. Executive chef Thuy Bich will lead the restaurant and is using recipes from her mother, Ahn Hoang, of Nam Midtown.
o The Select: From the same team behind the Vinings restaurant Paces and Vine, The Select will be known for a light interpretation of contemporary American comfort food with a top wine list. Think comfort food with a slight French accent.
City Springs will have three other retail tenants:
o Turn Studio: Turn Studio is a revolutionary, multi-sensory indoor cycling and strength fitness center. Owner Ashley Francis invites the community to “awaken your senses, elevate your spirit and move your body.”
o SculptHouse: SculptHouse, winner of seven Best of Atlanta Awards, combines the uber-trendy Lagree Megaformer with the Woodway Curve (an NFL-approved human-powered treadmill) for a core-sculpting, low-impact, but high intensity workout. It already has locations in Buckhead and Nashville.
o Vida-Flo: Vida-Flo, which also has a Buckhead location, offers the most effective and medically safe way for individuals to rehydrate their bodies. Specially formulated treatments allow for highly enhanced athletic performance and treat the effects of various illnesses.
Before the tenants were revealed, Chitty thanked the project’s partners, both public and private ones.
“The common thread was … passion and quality,” she said.
Paul said the city wanted to make sure City Springs has “a really rich retail environment.”
“We tore down a parking lot and put up paradise,” he said of the project, paraphrasing the reverse of the famous line in Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” song.
In an interview, Selig Enterprises President and Chair Steve Selig said he is “very proud” of City Springs.
“I think this is obviously a game changer for Sandy Springs,” he said. “I believe what we’ve accomplished here is we’ve got retail tenants that have Sandy Springs in the front of their minds, and that’s who they want to cater to. They’re all quality tenants. We feel very good about it.”
